Buying Commodore hardware

Buying an old shape Commodore 64 in good fully working condition is so difficult. Ebay appears to ideal place, although time and time again, I’m outbid by people who are obviously deperate for a Commodore 64. It makes me wonder who these people could possibly be.

My Commodore 64 boots up, but has issues. Random dots appears on the screen, as and when. Editors are out of the question, and running demos is hit n'miss.

Fatfrost , yep they are but you have to be very lucky =)

I'm sure there are still plenty of lofts etc holding machines, but once the retro people saw there was a market, it upped the prices *sigh*

Not commdore related but... What is the value of a Magnavox CD-Interactive (CD-I 200)? I search on ebay Canada but didn't see any. I got an offer of 90$ CAN (72$ US, 56 EU, 50 UK, 111 AUS$).

The Commodore 64 arrived, and it boots up just fine. Unlike my other 2 (non working) C64’s which have brown F keys, this new one has orange / beige F keys.

Checked out EOD/BD and it worked just fine, although while the demo was running I noticed the pallet was not so great.

Red appears too dark, unlike the usual washed out C64 Red :(
Orange looks too light, and not dark :(
Purple / Magenta looks too pink :(
Brown is possibly too dark :(

All the other colours look fine.

Is there any thing I can turn inside the hardware to sort the colours out?

I may be asking the obvious... But is your monitor / telly adjusted properly? That's where I'd look first before dissecting your new 64.

I'd part with my boxed 128 (in ORIGINAL static-free plastic), snapshot 5 cart, 1702 monitor and prolly all the cables that pertain to the c64 (might be a spare 1702 monitor cable, half baked x1541 cable, etc)...

I'd prolly want $20 for myself, YOU pay shipping.

It is an NTSC unit.. Just PM if interested.

*****EDIT

I forgot to mention there are 2 1541's. I know one works and one doesn't. I also think one drive is missing the "C=" logo from the top (it's on my monitor now).

The 1702 works 100%, as does the 128. The snapshot works as well, although it lacks the label it used to have.

I've been lugging this thing around for 8 years. Found it at a flea market and jumped on it. Hooked it up once, found it working and packed it all up again.

@ninjas bane - contrast brightness adjustment makes zero difference
@sad panda is sad - if so, old vic is no good

/checks out VICE.. new luminance’s on / off..
Looks like my new C64 has the old luminance >:(

left - old luminance
right - new luminance

picture: multimediot / dk

Notice how the orange looks too light, pink too bright, giving a horrible washed out look. No good for graphics / demos.

I once attempted to swap SID chips, from c64 to another, as one sounded better than the other. For some reason, it didn’t work out.

Can VIC chips be swapped around, for one c64 to another, if the 64’s are different revisions?

..after butchering 3 broken breadboxes (1 worked, all be it without sound, and weird screen issues) I’ve ended up with what appears to be a working C64. So now have a 1993 old / original luminance 64 and a 1994 with new luminance 64 :D

EOD running on standard TV, for that extra bass that the Commodore Monitor lacks :)
Its good to see c64 demos without the screen to audio miss timing that emu's feature.

Spoke too soon ;)
Loaded up Krestage 3, it loaded fine. 'Run' the demo and the intro worked fine. Then came the next part, and that to ran fine, until the 9th sprite appeared, well it didn’t appear. The music went wrong, one of the grey raster lines in the lower border vanished, and the whole screen turned black ? - I wonder what chip as the fault?
