First Demo with 4x4
4x4 Fli: Widely used in the demos of the 1990. But who made it first and when? Must be between 1989 and 1992 or so. |

Made in Germany?
EDIT: Lowering the resolution is a very old idea. Jeff Minter did some 8x8 effect in 1985. TTS did some 4x4 stuff before CL12 too, but it was 4 colors so it didn't need any display code. The innovation in CL12 (Coma Light 12) was not the low resolution, but the IRQ based display code. (Graham/Oxyron)

I always thought it was widely accepted that the credits for inventing useful 4x4 FLI are shared by Ed/WD and Graham/Oxyron. |

It's widely accepted by me at least, although I would give Graham at least 90% of the credit, since everyone knew you could make 4x4 effects with FLI, as there had already been 4x1 and 4x2 effects. The neat trick was to do it with interrupts, so most of the rastertime was free for drawing the pixels, and the genius part was having only an interrupt every 8th line. |
