Using TWO 1541 disk drives.
Hello.
Recently I got myself a second hand 1541 II drive, to be used along side my older 1541 I drive.
I was wondering if it's possible to use BOTH drives on one c64 at the same time. If it is, could someone help me with how to get them BOTH working. I know I feel like an idiot asking this question, but I've only been used to using one drive on a c64.
I did have a go linking both drives together (connected from 1541 I Drive to the "Interface" port on the 1541 II) and then connect the "Serial" from 1541 II to the c64. But unfortunately (using AR5 cartridge) I keep getting messages like "73, CBM DOS V2.6 1541,00,00" or "00, OK, 00, 00" instead of viewing the directories.
Please tell me what I'm doing wrong.
Thanks. |

the problem is that both drives thinks he is drive nr 8. you have to renumber the drives. you can do that with software or with a screwdriver. check google. |

Done that screwdriver/knife job and now works perfect!
Thanks for the help Oswald =)
Although after I cut jumper #1 for drive 9, I noticed the power LED is very dodgey, but I don't think that's a big issue. |

I know it's too late now, but the 1541-II has external dip switches that let you change the device number without cutting.
Enjoy your disk drives -- hope that unlit power LED doesn't mean anything sinister.

...aw crap! never mind.
Actually, I did the cut job on the older 1541-I drive, as I wanted the 1541-II to be my primary drive (8) and the 1541-I to be my secondary (9) and for use with parallel port on the PC. Thanks for letting me know anyway. |

you can also mount aswitched isnide 1541 or just drill holes in case (as I like old drives look like original I'd make dwo dip switches or such thing inside old 1541 ... )
another method is also bending 6522 pins out of socket but it's not good as they're easy to break.
