Can someone point me to more demos that use ECM this way? I can't remember seeing any, so for me this is first of a kind...

Yeah, did it in 1992 for Produkthandler Kom Her/Camelot, preceeded by a few months by Elysion - the Requiem/Origo, which I think was first to use dithered chars with ECM as big pixels. And then it's been used about 823412738712734234 times since then. :)
