Covers that you thought were original C64 tunes..
Back in the eighties/early nineties I was a HUGE nerd that never went 'out' or listened to music or whatever the cool kids did (OK, all of the aforementioned still applies, but.. :D)
That meant that pretty much the only music I listened to came from the glorious SID chip. In the years since there has been many occasions where I've heard a tune on the radio/TV/mp3 and gone "WOW! They made a cover of the tune from demo X" and then a second later "Uhmm.. wait a minute.. it was probably the other way around".
Some notable examples:
* Domino Dancing / Pet Shop boys. I thought this was a C64 original up until I heard it on the radio a couple of years ago :D
* The tune from some Success demo, turned out to be a Koto cover
* The superb introtune from Partytrap. It was not until I read the comments here on CSDB that I realized it was a cover.
OK, am I the only one who has experienced this? :D |

As a kid, for a while I thought Layla was a C64 song and it really shocked me when I heard the original on the radio.
By the way, sometimes I wonder why it's much more accepted on the scene to do cover music or remix than copying graphics? :) |

Not if you got good ears or a midi file. Almost every hip song got a midi file somewhere.
It's as difficult as the good old copy-with-grid method. (well, ok, 3 channels vs 16 colours)
Both are good practices, though, copying gfx and copying music. Especially picking out the essential bits, abstracting the details to less. |

Some fast complexity calculations....
3 channels * 65536 freq possibilities = 196608 possible channel/freq combinations
vs.
16 colours * 64000 pixels = 1024000 coulour/pixel combinations
concludes to: Songcovers should easier to be done than Imagecovers ;-)
But, wait! Maybe I should add the waveforms and pulses...
Then, there should be 3 ch * 65536 freq * (3 wf +(4 wf *4096 pulsevalues) = 3221815296 ch/freq/wf/pulse conbinations.
Correct me, if I'm wrong (which is almost inevitable).
Just kidding. I know how hard it is to compose, whether soundwise or visualwise, even to cover. Especially when you have no talent, like me! ;-)

For the longest time i was totally unaware that "Two divided by zero" from Trond Kjetil Lindanger
(of which i even made a cover "Division by zero") is in fact itself a cover of "Two divided by zero"
from the pet shop boys.
What a surprise that was.
I still prefer Trond's version a thousand times more than the "original".

I recently heard the 1942 music played in a very nice orchestral version on TV. I think it was at some danish crap award show (forgot which one)... Then checked the STIL and found out 1942 is a cover of the music from some movie called "633rd Squadron" from 1964... never knew that ;-) |

There is a dude who wishes to remain anonymous who have collected quite a few mp3s that are the originals to the corresponding sids. This collection contains at least to me quite many surprises, such as the original for the Maniac Mansion music etc.
If you wish I could get hold of the collection again and torrent it or something.

Most tunes by Hubbard.
"Two Divided by Zero" by Trond. I was also very surprised as Stainless Steel on this one.
Xpiose intro tune by Nordic Beat. I do not know who did the original but I have heard it in a restaurant. (BTW, this one is not in STIL yet. Other tunes from the same SID might be covers as well.)

Another one most people will not know are the Spijkerhoek sids, of which Edwin van Santen's version probably is the best well known.. i loved this tune so much that I even bought the cd-single which is nothing else then a tune from a dutch tv-show back in those days :) |

As I grew up with pop music and 60s stuff as the Beatles or Stones I was often introduced to classical music first by playing all these old games 1982-1985 which often used classic stuff.
examples: Jet Set Willy, Gyruss, Friday the 13th, Sailing, Tales of the Arabian Nighs, Elite, Battle through Time
I still admire Rimsky-Korsakov. |

TDJ .. I can understand with that specific song, out of all the songs it's not the best known of their work.
rough, as for classical , not like the original author could sue for usage, so they were easy target. It's like club'd to death by rob d (in the matrix) is a samuel barber tune =)
my favourite covers. .hhmm hypersports by martin galway /
l.e.d. storm by tim follin / venice in peril by ashley hogg (it's on the zzap sampler thing)
one of the first demos I saw ever was
The Bogg Collection Volume 1
but I didn't know all of tune songs.
there was a sample thing YEARS ago of "everyone was kung fu fighting" , I knew of the c64 thing before the actual song.
enola gay by OMD , I remember hearing on c64 first.
it's weird when it's the other way around .. e.g. lazy jones & zombie nation and the very obvious one thats going on at the moment. I wanted to know if anyone on here owns a sidstation, if so PM me, I'm just curious about a few things, thanks.

There are somewhat more like 2 notes that are equal, but second part is not 100% note for note,
it's maybe more like a remix.
All in all it's alot faster and has a harsher edge to it, but when i heard the original, i had that tune in my ear immediately.

Back when Metal made the Cream tune, I actually thought it was his own composition. It was only when I added his C64 music to our web site not long ago that I discovered the truth (it was actually an Amiga DMU tune composed by Ramon Braumüller). |

For me it's somewhat disappointing to find out that some of those classic tunes are "just" cover-versions,
as i always thought that they were original compositions.
Sure, it's another point to make it sound good on a C64 with only 3 channels and other limitations. |

Ive never seen that Pink Floyd video before, and to be fair, Ive havent viewed many Pink Floyd videos.
When it comes to their music, I really like the album Wish You Were Here. Dark Side of the Moon is ok, and I play The Wall from start to finish about about once a year.
I never picked up on, On the Run, as being part of the Delta tune, although having spent many hours playing Delta (and completing it), I do recall the tune very well. |

I think Rob Hubbard was probably 50/50 when it came to original content. The loading music for sanxion being original whilst the title screen wasnt. The in game tune to delta borrowed heavily from philip glass riffs but (I think!) the title tune was original. One track I don't think has been mentioned as a cover is One man & his droid - there is definately a section at the back end of the hubbard track that mimics the saxophone solo from the 1980's pop song "she's a man killer".

- Zoids/Hubbard. Many years later I found the original Synergy tune, was stunned, realised that it was the original, became disappointed of it and also 10x more amazed of Hubbard's awesome rendition. Quite obvious case.
- S-Express/JT. I had no love for that music style back in time so I totally missed the original. Loved JT's rendition, anyway. SID is a great style-indepentiser :) An another obvious case.
- Chameleon(?)/unknown. Back in time it was included in some intro I can't find anymore on old disks and I wasn't too educated about Herbie Hancock so again I was stunned when I heart Herbie's brilliant Chameleon track years later. Scanned Chamelon.SIDs on HVSC but I could not find that exact .sid Maybe, you have some idea...
- Some reverse case, any help is appreciated: Yo/NP. I heard this song in the radio back in the '80s once and never again. It stuck in mind and made a SID of it (not my best moments I must add), but never found out what the original was. For identification, any help is appreciated ;) |

iAN, thanks for the list!
I guess, it must be case #2, not ripped or identified.
For a moment I thought Tim Kleinert's is that but the one that I'm after included a pretty different main lead instrument and other things were changed in the song, going more away from the original Herbie Hancock tune, but still in a good direction. Maybe, it is an another version by Tim that was not spread that much, or someone liked his SID cover and made a tune based on his.
BTW, Glenn's rendition... WOW! :O |

Nice cover, by the way, concerning it is made just from memory. (like the detuned solo-sounds. exactly like the original)
Have some more STIL info that could be put in but i'm just too lazy...
Thanks, man!!!! :D
I was searching for that one, well, for ages :)
Quite weird thing, I like Beasties, still succesfully missed this album as well as the song, just heard once :)
I'll add this to my STIHL #54 entry.
I go now, found the song on YouTube, I can listen to this song after more then 20 years again :) \o/
Thanks again! :) |

Madonna covers from Dane are sweet. I always thought Pick Up The Pieces from PRI was SID original... then heard that funky tune on the radio one day... shocked! ;-) |

I had the same experience with Domino Dancing and Suburbia of Petshop boys... I've first heard them on SID.
There is one thing that I recently discovered, it's Grooving High (by Metal), which is a Cannonball Adderley jazz tune from around the '60s... at least the main phrase comes from there.
I'm thinking about remixing Soldier of Fortune (by Page) one time, but I wonder if it was a pop tune as the melody resembles a singer's vocal very much, and the other parts too sound kinda popular music...

Until today i thought it was an original. Though, it was really outstanding in that heineken demo compared to the other songs. Should've been a hint ;) |

I'm really surprised at how people don't know about Deep Purple :) it's like Jarre, every scener has to know it imho
Back to topic; the tune in the final part of New Dimension by Triad (1987). Some years ago I learnt what the original song was but I've forgotten it again.
The SID is a bloody brilliant fat track anyway, like the whole demo actually.
Some 20 years ago I was surprised to find out that parts of International Karate by Rob Hubbard are from Do or Die by Human Leage. (another superb track:)

Shame on me I didn't listen Deep Purple a lot, however I heard a lot about them, and know Child in Time... I have to listen to more music from this band at last.
Many thanks for the delightment on Soldier of Fortune, I'll check it out.

Some originals that I always thought were only SID tunes:
Enola Gay - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=szIx2hOiVWs
Koyaanisqatsi - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFnmH9a2RkE
I just heard "Living in Video" for the first time the other night, for years I thought it was just a MOD file made for that Kaktus & Mahoney demo on the Amiga. |

I love Stationary Ark which was remixed and was a music in Synth Sample. However I couldn't find the TV series which was somewhere said to be source for this tune..

'Zakplus' of Shogoon is an excellent cover of this great Scott Joplin ragtime tune called 'The Easy Winners':

Haha, I've had this before, too! ;-D Thinking they stole the SID (again?), while it was the other way around...
Straight from the top of my head, the (well, for me) not so obvious ones:
JT42 / Jeroen Tel = Running in the Family by Level 42 (though JT only took the hookline and went from there, doing his own thing- better than the original IMHO! 8)
Soldier of Fortune / Page = Soldier of Fortune by Deep Purple
Some Last Ninja Tune (or IK?) = Traditional chinese folk song (Also covered by Modern Talking: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z8Vg9EvaFv4 )
Delta / Rob Hubbard = Koyaanisqatsi by Philip Glass http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LFBijDU8PpE (near the end!)
Dutch Breeze Mix-e-load = Canon in D-Minor by Johann Pachelbel |

It's better to say "Covers the beginning." |
