What demos would you recommend for outsiders?
I am going to show a bunch of people that have no clue about demos what the C64 demoscene is all about, and want to present a few demos.
Which demos do you think are good for impressing people who've never seen a demo? |

"good for impressing people who've never seen a demo?"
sorry to say it, but one of the recent PC demos is probably the only thing that would do that. |

otherwise go for gfx heavy demos. with good gfx i mean, coz while most wont understand how hard it is to code, they usually do understand old stuff was blocky. and now tey get awesome blocky stuff to see. :) |

generally dont expect them to be impressed, if they've no idea what it takes to get something moving in realtime on any computer :)
that means you have to try demos which are visually / musically impressive, and forget anything that impresses with tech. this two is not exclusive, fex. EoD or CL13 are impressive on all fields imho. |

let them watch Moleman 2
http://molemanfilm.com/moleman-2-download/
it's all explained there.. what & why
by viewing a demo an outsider wouldn't get impressed in any way, without knowing anything of the concept "demo" |

Ask them about their first computers and then check for any demo for that particular plattform/specs.
Sometimes even Unreal2 might do for PC lamers :) |

Something action-packed from the start. Usually these kinds of people lose interest if there's too much "[groupname] presents" text and gfx in the first minute. |

I think, in order to get someone to like a platform they've never seen, you should show them one of the earlier demos of the c64. This way, they can laugh and look at you the way most friends do when they think you're crazy.
While the laughing is going on, load up something from this year. I wish I could name one, but there were so many awesome releases this year, for me to choose one wouldn't be fair at all, unless, of course, I had real hardware. Emulated is ok, but it just gets you by. Sort of shows what it can do and how it sounds, but it DOES lack.
You can't go wrong with ANY of the "top demos" in the sidebar (not latest releases, but TOP DEMOS). |

start with older stuff, the roots.. even the old compunet demos e.g. by ian+mic / ash+dave / stoat and tim etc etc... then progress a bit.... I remember things like the HIC megademo and stuff like that..
some demos I'd discount.. e.g. dutch breeze, as there is 1 part they might find offence.
and just progress thru the years.. depends how much time you have. I would say explain that using pc cross dev has changed things, I think that would be fair to say.
stuff with amazing technical stuff, that people who don't code may not get.. that isn't so obvious I'd avoid unless it's visual..
things like the gameboy part from the paradize demo.. and eddie in the censor demos etc etc. for 2 examples that people would relate to. |

WWIII
Hello:FRIEND
Romeo
One Million Lightyears from Earth
Postcards from Stockholm
Wok Zombie
Pretending to See the Light
Manhood 2
Feedback
i guess you don't have to understand the c64 coding issues to appreciate most of them. |

Different angles. Screenings would help... ( I mean.. like movie screenings before they get butchered in cuttingroom and butchered according to the questionaires, the scum is handing over to the producers after the screening...) |

Thank you for all the replies and suggestions here! I ended up showing a little bit of several pieces, and also some artwork.
I did it in context of a documentary pitch, and it reminded me it's really hard to get outsiders to understand our fascination, both past and present. My goal, however, is to pull that off; I want the ordinary Joe to understand. And so I do not want to make it too technical - it's not just for us. |
