Are you guys going to release all the tunes from VN 74? I'd love to listen to some of them via deepsid (especially that 6R6 one!

If someone could make their own diskmag with similar features offering all of these storage options, that would be even better. :)

If some of you wish to discuss this further, please make a forum thread and do it there.

If someone could write an article about all of this for me for the next edition, would be great. Thanks!

@SLC, why should U2 and U2+ users, even use a d81-version of a software, when a REU-version exists too, that offers much faster loading times? :-) Of course, when users see a d81-version, the first thing, some of them will think is, that this can, or should, be used on a SD2IEC too. Offering a d81 version, that finally will only be used by maybe three handful of 1581 users, doesn't really make sense and when the used loader even has kernal fallback (which i didn't knew before) it would make even more sense, to make it SD2IEC-compatible. Otherwise, the d81-version can also be removed and a cartridge version can be offered instead, for Easyflash and pi1541 users. I think it would always make the most sense to design software so that as many users as possible can use it. But well, ultimately that's the decision of the programmers. But the fact that people wish that the D81 on offer was compatible with SD2IEC is more than understandable.

Quoting 'SLC'
...
You're forgetting the several thousand U2/U2+ and Pi1541 units out there that now fully emulates 1581, which most likely exceeds 1581 users and SD2IEC users combined... :) The d81 makes pefect sense even without SD2IEC support.

But what about the thousands of TC64 users who don't have real 1581 either... For them an old firmware SD2IEC used to be a nice option.

And yeah, I might invest some bucks in a new SD2IEC, one day or another.

And I didn't say the .D81 made no sense, even on emulator it's nice not having to flip disk/change image.

GPZ: "The loader _does_ have kernal fallback after all - you are just being lazy and mean to not use it :)"

I certainly won't deny being lazy, but kernal fallback and background loading doesn't play very well with all the shit going on with open borders, all of zeropage (and most other memory) being utilized, decrunching while loading and so on.

"Nevertheless it's a little bit sad too, because there will definitely be significantly more SD2iEC-users, than 1581-users and the d81-version would have made alot more sense then."

"There's already an unofficial firmare for the SD2IEC around by the way, that has compatibility to more fastloaders included, but it only works on SD2IEC's with 128kb microcontrollers."

KAL_123: Okay, to get this straight... you're aware that SD2IEC firmware support exists, but refuse to accept that people won't cater to devices that are incompatible with the C= drives of old... and keep on using not only SD2IEC, but a low-end version of it that cannot run said compatibility-enabled firmware?

It's tempting to reply with "just ask Krill to add SD2IEC support to his loader", but I'm not *that* cruel.

@Perplex, understand, then nothing can be done. Sure, the loader would have had to be exchanged, perhaps with the "GI Joe Loader" or something like that, which of course would have meant a lot of effort. Therefore understandable to a certain extent. Nevertheless it's a little bit sad too, because there will definitely be significantly more SD2iEC-users, than 1581-users and the d81-version would have made alot more sense then.

It's tempting to reply with "just ask Krill to add SD2IEC support to his loader", but I'm not *that* cruel.

Unfortunately supporting SD2IEC would require massive changes throughout the code, and I simply don't have the time nor the incentive to work on that. If you don't have access to a 1581 drive or any of the products that grant a 2MB+ REU-like feature, you'll have to make do with the 1541 version or use an emulator, sorry.

Typo and to late to correct it. Of course i meant " If they ask for SD2IEC version ..." in last sentence.

@Magic, sounds good, what you wrote.

@Hedning, again a comment about SD2IEC, where you should not make one, similar to your comments in the "Night Mission Pinball" entry, to the one in "Spookie Preview" and and and. If some people mention SD2IEC somewhere or not, is their thing and not yours. I like SD2iEC, some other people like it, you apparently not, it seems. That's your problem, not mine. You write what you want, here in the CSDB and other people write what they want. If they answer for SD2IEC version, they have all right to do so.

SD2IEC whining is tiresome. Get your gear, and get real. Or complain to the SD2IEC devs, or know what you bought. This release works great on real hw.It's not VN:s fault that people buy inferior hw.

+1 @what KAL sez on .D81 version
would be great to implement "turn off loader" option and thus make it run on SD2IEC (as it used in former issues to be IIRC) as this is a far spread device and makes it quite comfortable to enjoy the mag on (un)real hw

otherwise very good read as usual!

excellent issue once again, it will take me till xmas to read everything :)
what I've read so far is consistently awesome. I really like Trident as top personality, very deserved with the huge amount of quality releases he was a driving force for in 2023 :)

Neat surprise! That intro is a genius. It took me a while to figure out how it's done. My first guess was ECM but it's even simpler with charset switching. Now beat it and make it x-movable.

Regarding Propaganda: "Where is the Propaganda disk magazine?" (VN News chapter). Tip: Reach out to me - and I could have explained it for ya and get quoted. It's on its way, and being the only editor atm made it hard to realize 3 issues a year. :)
