zscs: that's a good point. 3-colour logos are great for intros of course - but adding D800 data can add a lot to the look without adding (too) much to the size so, yeah, why not? |
User Comment Submitted by zscs on 6 November 2023
...or aMulticolor Text Logo compo, where chars also limited to 256 chars but Colours from 0-7 could be used independently on each of every char - including hires mode chars! ;-) |

This compo has some fantastic entries..!
No chance of a re-run? It's been TEN YEARS already! |

Yes, don't forget Didi and his efforts to bring that Compo to a successful Event ... 10 Points as an Organizer. @CSDb: Events like these holding the C64 scene alive and pushing the database to the point of interest. Thx for your platform too ... |

Great compo, Didi. One of the cool things about limiting entries to one charset & 3 colours is that it tempted procrastinators like myself into doing something under the (mistaken) belief that it wouldn't be too time consuming. :) |

ALEA IACTA SUNT!
The final ranking for this great competition is done! It is based on a votes snapshot taken on March 24, 2013 at 00:00 (CET). If you look at the votes later, the result might look slightly different.
*** Thanks to to all participants for making this such a great event! ***
Here we go with the ranking table. The ranking is based on the weighted votes average of ALL votes given at CSDb until voting deadline (not public votes only). Entries with the same weighted votes average are ranked by the percentage of 10s and 9s.

I spent a good evening the other day, downloaded everything, watched it on hardware and sorted all entries. Now my finger hurts from all vote-clicking. Some of the better/interesting entries are too low i.m.o and they got my (anonymous) up-vote. Thanks to all the participants and Didi for hosting this great compo. |
User Comment Submitted by ChristopherJam on 22 March 2013
I'm pretty amused after all the early discussions of hand-pixelled logos vs code conversions that the logo I made in photoshop in ten minutes and spent hours coding a converter for (demeter) is currently scoring a whole point higher than the logo I spent around five hours hand pixelling (domino). I guess I need to work on my pixelling skills ;)
Is anyone interested in workstages for the latter? I've got over 5000 screen caps, just need to shoehorn them into an animated gif or some such. |
User Comment Submitted by ChristopherJam on 22 March 2013
I've just lazily voted on the current top 16, by sorting them in order and spreading votes from 5 to 10. It means I've given lower rankings to the last few than I would in isolation, but without half-points this is the only way I can avoid giving the same score to pairs I see as significantly different in quality.
Mad props to Didi for organising, and to bepp/TRIAD for the summary page! |

Hey thanx Didi... I would never have thought of that, never seen that... THANX it worked - I have removed my 10 vote for me! I am the idiot! |
User Comment Submitted by Didi on 21 March 2013
You can delete votes via Userpage -> History/View your vote history. It shows the release votes by default, but deleting does not work unless you reload the page by re-selecting "release votes" from the select box at the upper right corner and click "go". Then deleting works. |
User Comment Submitted by enthusi on 21 March 2013
A bit off-topic, but cant you just delete any votes you made via your Userpage? |
User Comment Submitted by PAL on 21 March 2013
ahhh...thanx did not slip into my stupid mind... thanx, I will do that and vote them all later tonight! |

User Comment Submitted by PAL on 21 March 2013
yes, and ask someone to remove it later... but I cant remove it... I am stuck because of me being drunk and voted on my self... I know... it is a shame... ...but on the other hand I think that logo is one of the best in the compo so my vote stands til some can remove it for me. And please, let us not go there... we already did.
PS: I am voting, but the list is populated in different way each time... ohhhh... |
User Comment Submitted by Raffox|HF on 21 March 2013
@PAL: yeah you're right man, too much hassle... better self voting a straight 10/10 just like you did. |
User Comment Submitted by Conjuror on 21 March 2013
Great compo, great effort from everyone involved and fantastic that csdb was running really fast as I managed to vote all entries in less than 15 mins. |
User Comment Submitted by enthusi on 21 March 2013
Just commenting (wondering/smartassing) on 'weighted average':
you mean normal average or the own non-average alogrithm used by CSDb?
(any) averages are of course (by definition) influenced by up/down-votes (which _I_ would refer to as 'votes').
For some time now I hope that people will consider average+variance :) |
User Comment Submitted by PAL on 21 March 2013

@ Didi
thank you for the nice competition and organization!
it was a good come back into the scene for me.
and i enjoyed all this lovely logos here! |
User Comment Submitted by Didi on 21 March 2013
I clearly stated how it will be handled in this compo: All votes are taken. Everything else might be discussed elswehere.
Only at competitions with a jury you can force them to vote on all entries. For everything with public voting, people mainly vote on things they like most or dislike most. People are torn about some entries. It was the same at the Crack Intro Music Compo. Some upvoting and downvoting can be seen, but the weighted average and a high amount of votes make them rather useless. |
User Comment Submitted by Raffox|HF on 21 March 2013
Not necessarily, but could happen.
That's why only public votes should be considered.
|
User Comment Submitted by Pantaloon on 21 March 2013
Forcing someone to vote for all entries would result in alot of 1:s. |
User Comment Submitted by Raffox|HF on 21 March 2013
A good rule to apply (maybe with the next compo), would be that if a user decides to vote, he has to do it for all the entries. It's not fair to have entries with over 100 votes and others barely reaching 30s or 40s, to say some.
Also... public votes alone, in some cases, do make the difference.
ie:my logo ranks 55, which is different from 43 (counting public votes only). |
User Comment Submitted by Didi on 21 March 2013
Using public votes only might change the ranking at other places, but as I checked Top 3 yesterday it did not. Infact the results with public and all votes are very similar. |
User Comment Submitted by TheRyk on 21 March 2013
I disagree about public votes NOT making ANY change in the ranking. But the change would be so slight that no one should worry. |
User Comment Submitted by chatGPZ on 21 March 2013
"Using public votes only does not change the ranking but kicks away up to 65% of the given votes."
hear hear =P |
User Comment Submitted by Didi on 20 March 2013
The ranking of this compo will be based on all CSDb votes, not on public votes only.
Top 3 is still very close! All 3 rating at 9.3 with current 1st place having 50% 10s @ 102 votes and 3rd place has 46.3% 10s @ 80 votes.
Using public votes only does not change the ranking but kicks away up to 65% of the given votes. |

Well, I did my due diligence and voted for each logo (except my own). Didi: well done, this was a great compo! Everyone: I enjoyed your logos, creativity and techniques. Learned a lot too, so thank you all. :D |
User Comment Submitted by chatGPZ on 17 March 2013
gotta love how it actually doesnt make a difference whether you take anon votes into consideration or not =) damn anonymous properlyvoters =) |
User Comment Submitted by Didi on 17 March 2013
All entries are validated, 107 are left as valid entries.
Voting closes in one week at March 23, 2013 at 23:59:59 (11:59:59 pm) CET.
To guarantee a result as fair as possible, as many of you as possible should place their votes. Please also vote on the currently lower ranked entries, not only the top rankings.
Here is an intermediate ranking for today. You can see top 3 are very close to each other.

Whatever you say... Mr Groepaz.
Maybe (I say maybe) stupid, lame, pointless and offensive releases can collect downvoting. |

User Comment Submitted by Raffox|HF on 16 March 2013
Oh yes, sure! The unfamous Revisited Rambo Compo, where everybody else was downvoting... right?
Yeah, that was fun... since I was immediately downvoted on my entry. Yup, that was fun really!
Like if I am the firestarter... please Groepaz.
|
User Comment Submitted by chatGPZ on 16 March 2013
i find it pretty hilarious that someone who downvoted every single entry in another compo has the nerve to complain about 2 or 3 low votes on his own entry here. but maybe its just me =P |
User Comment Submitted by Raffox|HF on 16 March 2013
AND thanks to the "mindless" upvoters, Mr. Rob in particular who seems to publicly appreciate someone's effort.
@Mr.Bruglaz: you happy nau? =] |
User Comment Submitted by Didi on 16 March 2013
The only real weapon against down- or upvoting is to have as many voters on one entry as possible. So to make the results as fair as possible, please do not only vote on the top placed entries. There are several entries with 80+ votes and some that have below 20. |
User Comment Submitted by Burglar on 16 March 2013
Raffox, you forgot to thank the mindless upvoters on your entry too ;)
Above all greetings to Rob, as he didn't hide his 10/10 like all the other anonymous upvoters ;) |

Oh, it was just an idea to everyone in brackets. I'd better do some activities which I'm more capable of. I guess organizing a compo and being always fair & strict at the same time is a very hard task, at least for me... :)
(Sorry if I maybe brought it up at the wrong place). And yeah, welcome back \o/ |

Bepp! this collection is wonderful, extra props for the randomized order...
(Limitations - which make sense - can always cause challenge & fun, so I wonder if there will be a PETSCII competition too, that would cause even more surprising achievements. There are many inspiring perfect PETSCII artworks around already :) |
User Comment Submitted by Bob on 12 March 2013
This compo starts to have a deeper meaning
it is not just a logo.. logos => intro => demo => everyone active and compeeting... 8)=)
We will se an upgrade of all intros I presume as a result from this compo. Great intros might end up in demos... I can now see the future 8)=) the scene has collected enough exp points to go to next level ;)
not to mention the competitive spirit it creates ;) it will become a drug!..
|
User Comment Submitted by Yazoo on 12 March 2013
@bepp: some disqualified (using too many chars), and some outside due to the fact that theres a rule of having a maximum of 3 entries in the compo. |

I "understand" both Sides. The Rules have been broken as the Admins say so he had to be banned, or atleast it was their decission.
BUT
Imagine a Birthday Party. Would anybody of You continue the Party, drinking or dancing, whatever if the "Inventor" (Birthday having Person) has been kicked out of the Partyplace ?
Guess not.
So I`d say as long as he`s banned the Compo has to be cancelled or Paused as it is "HIS" Compo |

There is no reason to stop the compo. There are already over 50 submissions and more to come; the compo is about art, not about Didi. Let's keep the art flowing and the drama can work itself out over time. Eight days left! |
User Comment Submitted by Akira on 8 March 2013
Yes, this compo has to be finished, drama aside. If Didi does not want to do so, well, sorry but, coup d'etat and someone else does and stuff gets released ;) |
User Comment Submitted by Bob on 8 March 2013
I remember us being thrown out from the parties :)
we became even more popular by that.. ;)
finally somebody stirring/kooking around in the soup hahaha
but the kompo has become a trade mark and has to be fulfilled!
since when has an online compo got so many followers or participators?
anyone who succeeds to do such earns my respect! DIDI is a big part of this.
this alone makes him worth while in my book.. and forgiven :)

Seems to me some of the staff here simply thought banning him would be cheered or fully supported by the majority of us - appears they were wrong? |
User Comment Submitted by Fungus on 8 March 2013
As much as some of the comments and what not are stupid... I don't think Didi should be banned. He isn't a huge trouble maker like Wanderer and TWR are... as much as many don't like what he does with his group or whatever, it's not like he's causing a huge problem with most of the scene. In fact quite the opposite... just my 2 cents. |
User Comment Submitted by lemming on 8 March 2013

People have been slapped on the wrist before. I'd put my money on the ban being lifted in 2-5 days.
Moderators make the rules, and it would just be easier for everyone to follow them instead of constantly bickering about it - which is essentially what Didi seemed to specialize in lately. I'm sure when Didi realizes this, he'll be back in no time and the mods will have mercy on him.

Banning someone who brought some life into the sleepy C64 scene? Wha' d'f'?
I guess there is some serious violation of something but until some really valid explanation, the first sentence that comes to my mind begins with "stupid motherfuckers". I respectfully resign that if there is some valid reason behind it.
Edit: respectfully resigned. |

Come on dudes... What the fuck? We are only humans and we all on here get emotional sometimes, not me because I am pure... lol... but seriously? I just do not get it... I enjoy the most laxity uploads... is there anything I do not understand here? They upload a release and it is not regarded as a real one is that it? or is it other? I do not understand? If their floppys were found in like 10 years it would be uploaded just because of their intro on them right? Am I dumb here? I just do not understand the comments... sorry for my lame arse! If I took a horizon demo and put my intro on it in 1989 and that floppy were found 39 years after, would it be uploaded or not on here? with my own intro on it that is?
If I now download the fairlight rutig banan demo, put a offence intro on it with a scroller logo and a text and release it as insane banan trusting the gaping hole of mona lisa and release that... will it be up here or not? I will also upload another one where the coders are named Absinthe, the victim and ms gonerae... is that enough? music bu lankopankomanko and graphics by the sleep... is that enough? Will it be up here... OK... If I change one sprite? Will it be up here then...? What the fuck... DiDi we trust in you... gape the compo and be a slut... ha ha... I meen what the hell dudes!
I always have loved the rippers and we all did that sometime... but I do not if that is what is the case here but it seem to be to me... If they ripped something and altered the name of the file in the dir, isnt it still a c64 release as we have here on this database? isnt there lots of lots of that? Or is it not? if that is the case? I just do not understand because I am dumb and just think it is cool that others do think the same I love is cool and they do something at all... change a letter in dir and a new intro... release! |

Bad news. Sorry to say, but Didi has been kicked out of CSDB and he asked me to tell you that the compo is canceled, as he can't take care from the outside. The reasons for kicking him are kind of a mystery to us and have not been told. Ask the admins of this very site for reasons. Sad to see another active guy, that actually contributed a lot (specially to growth of this archive) been thrown out. Sorry to all you guys who did a fabulous job and put much efforts into this, but under this circumstances you probably will understand that it does not make much sense to carry on with this compo. Never really been active here, but I guess I will deactivate my account as well. Take care... |

It's intersting to notice how very few graphicians have designed logos with more complexity, showing some sort of dynamic going on... and I don't refer to the scrolling ones. Most of them, as of now, just went for a simple static design. |

"/edti2: The Logo has to be main part of the graphics to qualify the entry as a "logo"."
I think in few releases that specific rule is not respected... as the main part is not the (huge) logo but the scrolling effect applied to it.
Still I like those borderline productions, even if they show more techinical than artistic skills. |
User Comment Submitted by Didi on 24 February 2013
I did not expect so big movers but the rules are as is and the entries are valid. But I would like the voters to concentrate on the "pixel art" part of the logos, not on the way they are presented with big move-code. If I look at the votes most voters already do so. |
User Comment Submitted by chatGPZ on 24 February 2013
"must not be limited to screen size" (which pretty much implies "demo" type entries with a logo mover) was in there from the start though. |

"We have now demos and gfx in one compo, and this is not a good situation. Separate compo, please?"
bollocks. if you dont like the rules of a compo - do not compete. it IS that simple really. |
User Comment Submitted by wacek on 24 February 2013
Yazoo was the first one to raise this, so let me back him up (though he is too nice guy so he backed from it a little bit :D).
It's always positive that people get creative, and ANY inflow of releases is a good thing, BUT I think it would be better if some of those releases would be moved outside of the compo - pure coded & converted ones. Or, to be appreciative of those works, let's quickly start up a new compo for those ;)
I don't think it is fair to compare things when you vote in parallel strictly on the code merit (and do not care at all if the gfx is pure ass ugly) and handpixelled art. If the result is based only on vote average and cannot factor that difference in (which compo jury probably would). The result is 10 minutes of code including converted gfx scored higher that someone else's 2 or 3 days of hand pixelling. We have now demos and gfx in one compo, and this is not a good situation. Separate compo, please?
Just my 2 cents. |

Is it possible to have the top 3 place getters highlighted in another colour(s) perhaps? Just an idea. |

In most cases crappiness might have been the reason for not releasing unreleased logos 20 years ago, unlike wine they will not get better if you hide them in the cellar =) Maybe we should make an unreleased crap competition next. |

It would be cool to see some huge ass scrolling ones too :)
to the question: one color must be from the first 8, the other 3 can be anything |
User Comment Submitted by rexbeng on 18 February 2013
One tiny question concerning the rules: it says, "one of the 3 + background colors has to be one of the first 8 colors". Does that mean a) out of four total colors on screen one must be of the first 8 and the other three of the second 8, or b) out of 3 colors one must be of the first 8, two of the second 8 but the background can be any of the 16 colors we like..?
From what I've seen in the entries it must be the case (b), but since I'm the newer guy here I must say it's not as self explanatory as you may think. Well, at least not to someone with zero experince on the C64 :P |

Seems another clarification has to be done what qualifies an entry as a "logo" See /edit2 below. Sad it has to be explained what a "logo" is. Thought this would be a clear term. |

Just an idea/constructive criticism for future competitions: Maybe limiting the size of the entries to so-and-so-many (one third/half or two thirds of screen ram's height) tiles height might be a good idea to prevent people from submitting fullscreen pics.
Nice competition already, though, lookin fwd to more entries. |

Quote:THE RULES:
- Entries have to be in simple multicolor mode (Koala, etc) or multicolor charset (max. 256 chars). This rules out HiRes parts. |

@Didi: Is mixed multicolour mode (hires+multi) allowed? :) |

Added a small explanation to the rules to set clear what the "logo" should be (/edit in first comment at the bottom). |

@The USER: I fear some people might beat up your ass if you spoil the compo that way. ;) |

Hey... what a great idea! Count me in, please! :) |
User Comment Submitted by Didi on 13 February 2013
@Yazoo: Would not be plain 3-color and would be disqualified. The entry has to be plain 3-color in multicolor mode, whatever a coder might make of it afterwards. |
User Comment Submitted by Yazoo on 13 February 2013
love it... count me in! btw - what about a colorsplit? like the upper half of the logo using other 3 colors than the lower half. i think that was pretty common back in the days |
User Comment Submitted by Oswald on 13 February 2013
great! I love all those cool old 3col logos, interested to see what they'll look in 2013 :) |

THE RULES:
- Entries have to be in simple multicolor mode (Koala, etc) or multicolor charset (max. 256 chars).
- Max. usage of 3 colors + background overall, of which one has to be one of the first 8 colors.
- Entry has to be convertible into a single multicolor charset (max. 256 different chars) or already be converted.
- Has to be a "logo", means there must be something to read that makes some sense.
- Logo is not limited to letters or digits only. There might be something around/besides/within it.
- Logo is not limited to screen size.
- All entries must be handed in as executable format and be able to show the full logo.
- No music or visual effects allowed besides movers which are needed to show logo in full size.
- Must not be used in a public production before.
- The logo is not allowed to be used in any public production before voting deadline.
- Max. 3 entries per participant. Entries might be taken back from the compo until deadline. That means if you want to remove one of your works from the compo to make space for another entry from you, this can be done until deadline.
Deadline for entry submission is March 16, 2013 at 23:59:59 (11:59:59 pm) CET.
Voting closes one week later at March 23, 2013 at 23:59:59 (11:59:59 pm) CET.
Voting platform is CSDb, therefore entries have to be posted here.
Entries will be ranked by weighted average of CSDb votes. Entries with the same weighted average are ranked by their percentages of 10s, 9s, etc.
No prices to win, just the fame.
Happy pixeling!
/edit: About what the logo should show is usually a name, groupname, handle, group short or handle short, etc. (e.g. GP, JSL are OK, too). You may also take the name of your favourite beer if you like, but please do not repaint the original label. Be more creative, please. ;) You may paint around/inside whatever you want (stars, skulls, etc), as long as it does not exceed the limits of complexity (256 different chars) and colors (3+background, one has to be of the first 8 colors). Backgound does not need to be black. I usually use The Ultimate Pic Converter to convert pictures to charset.
/edti2: The Logo has to be main part of the graphics to qualify the entry as a "logo". A 3-color-picture with a small part of text does not make it a "logo". |
